No. 54 .
McKINLESS LAMP.
Made by Milne, Edinburgh.
CONSTRUCTION.
This is a gauzeless lamp.
Over the glass is a chimney which tapers from 11/2 ins diameter at the bottom to ? ins at the top.
This chimney is enclosed at the sides by a cylindrical iron cover 11/2 ins diameter, with, at the top, a perforated brass cap through which the products of combustion escape and, at the bottom of the sides, perforated brass to permit the entry of inlet air. That part of the lamp is like a Mueseler, having a chimney but a partly solid and partly perforated cover instead of a gauze.
The lamp is double-bonnetted, both bonnets being perforated.
Air enters the perforated bonnets near the middle ring, passes through the small perforations in the inner plate whence it is deflected down to the flame.
HISTORICAL NOTE.
This lamp was produced by McKinless in 1886. It was the first gauzeless lamp which was at all successful. Not until well into the 20th century was any further notable effort made to produce a satisfactory gauzeless lamp. (C.F. Bests Gauzeless Lamp No. ).
