London Lead Company

Scope and Content

The Company for Smelting down Lead with Pit Coal and Sea Coal, usually called the London Lead Company or Quaker Company was granted its original charter by William and Mary on 14 Oct 1692. Initially the Company's interests were concentrated on Bristol including the purchase of lead mined in Wales, smelting at Bristol Smelt Mill and shipping to London. These interests closed on 27 May 1695. The Company was re-formed on 10 Feb 1705 by members of the Society of Friends (Quakers), most of whom were already members of the Ryton Company, with interests in Ryton Smelt Mill and associated mines on Alston Moor and the Royal Mines Copper, with interests in Wales. These two Companies were incorporated into the London Lead Company, the Royal Mines Copper on 27 Feb 1705 and the Ryton Company on 15 May 1705

During the period 1710 - 1790 the Company's interests were mainly concentrated in the North Pennines and in Wales. The North Pennine area consisting of Alston Moor, where they had inherited leases from the Ryton Company and later aquired considerable tracts of land under lease from the Greenwich Hospital Corporation which had purchased the estates of the Earl of Derwentwater after the Jacobite Rising of 1715, and mines in Teesdale, Weardale, the Derwent Valley and Westmorland. Reference is also made to them having interests in Wanlockhead and Stirling, Scotland, Orkney and the Isle of Man, Derbyshire, Lancashire and Southern Ireland. By 1790 however, all their interests, including those in Wales, had been sold off with the exception of those in the North Pennines and the period 1790 - 1882 saw the consolidation of the Company's interests on Alston Moor, Teesdale, Weardale and Hilton and Murton, Westmorland. The Derwent Valley mines were sold off in 1806. By 1882 the mines were beginning to run down and the Company closed in 1905

The records consist of 41 minute books recording the Company's activities, 1692 - 1899, including a minute book of the Royal Mines Copper Company, 1697 - 1704. The final minute book 1899 - 1905 is missing. There is also a volume of reports on mines on Alston Moor, Weardale, Teasdale and Derwent Valley, 1806 - 1820, a copy of the original and amended charters of the Company, made 1856 and 3 volumes of plans. The minutes are concerned with the mining, smelting, shipping and sale of lead with reference also to the mining and refining of silver, much of which was sold to the Royal Mint. The content is mainly financial but with some technical information and reports on individual mines and from the late 18th century there are frequent references to the Company's social policy including the provision of miners' housing particularly the building of Nenthead Village, schools, medical and social facilities
